Fees and Bursaries

Since 2006 almost all universities have been charging the maximum top-up fees for all full-time students, currently £3,145 per year.

Here at Croydon College we believe that university level education should be open to the maximum number of people, and have therefore set our fulltime foundation degree fees at £2,315. Furthermore all full-time home and EU students will be entitled to a universal £1,050* cashback bursary each year of their course. Fees for full-time BA or BSc Honours courses are £3,145 per year, but once again with the entitlement to a £1,050* cashback bursary as above.

This comes in staged payments made directly to you as you successfully progress through your course. The only conditions attached to the bursary are that you do not already hold a higher education qualification at the same or higher level (although this is acceptable in some cases – see below).

All full-time students may also take advantage of the low interest government loan scheme to cover fee payments. This is nothing like borrowing on a credit card, and you will not have to repay anything until you have graduated and are earning at least £15,050 per year.

Full-time students are also entitled to student loans to cover their living expenses. All students are automatically entitled to 75% of the maximum loan amount. Entitlement to the remaining 25% depends on your income and that of your household. The maximum student loan for living expenses for a student living away from home is £6,475.

Around half of all full-time students are also likely to be eligible for a yearly Maintenance Grant of up to £2,835 per year. This grant is non-repayable, and how much you get depends on your household income. This combination of Government support for living expenses and Croydon College bursary can make studying a university level course in Croydon a real option for many people.

Part-time Students

Many of our university level students study part-time combining earning with learning. We are committed to making part-time study as affordable as possible and have kept actual fees payable very low. The Government has made a means tested package of support available to part-time students to help with both course fees and study costs. These fee and course grants are non-repayable. The maximum grant available (combined fee and course) is £1,435 for 2008–2009 for a single person with no dependents, and an income of less than £16,090. The actual amount payable is dependent on both income and the ‘intensity’ of the part-time course. Many of our students qualify for both fee and course grants. Should you have any queries about funding or fees, please get in touch with our Welfare and Advice Centre by emailing wac@croydon.ac.uk or by phoning 020 8686 5700 ext 3779 who can offer individual advice and have a range of printed materials available.

International Students

The College counts many full international students in its number, and fees for all fulltime courses are just £4,750 per year. For more details please contact the College directly, where an advisor will be happy to help you further. Bursary is subject to attendance requirements, and providing an equivalent or higher level qualification is not already held, excluding FD Early Childhood Studies which has a bursary deducted directly from fees payable. If you already hold a degree or HE equivalent you may not be eligible for financial support. All figures quoted relate to academic session 2008–2009 and are correct at time of going to press.

The Student Loans Company offers all full time students a low interest loan to cover the cost of fees and living expenses. This does not become repayable until you have finished your course and then repayments are spread over many years.

Over and above this many full time students are also entitled to means tested grants to help with living expenses for those students with a household income of up to £60,005. These are non repayable and can be up to £2,765 per year.  There is also a package of Government support available for part time students on higher education courses.

For independent information on student finance please see the direct.gov website.

^  ELQ Policy. From 08-09 the Government will no longer fund students to study for a Higher Education qualification if they already hold an equivalent or higher level qualification. This includes both the funding which the College would normally receive towards tuition, and the package of student/fee loans and means tested grants usually available.  There are exemptions to this policy however, including Foundation Degrees and Initial Teacher Training courses.  If you are in any doubt about eligibility please contact the College for guidance.
